Essential oils are natural compounds found in seeds, stems, flowers — and almost every other part of a plant. When you squeeze an orange peel or lemon peel, for instance, the fragrant residue left behind contains essential oil. Essential oils are extremely potent to the nostrils and provide scent and additional health benefits to your beard oil. They have been used for thousands of years for their medicinal and therapeutic benefits, a few of which are listed below:
A lot of men don’t like a lot of scent period, or they prefer unscented beard oils as some scented beard oils contain harsh smelling oil like tea tree oil, which isn’t what you want to smell all day long right under your nose. If you fall into this category, go for an unscented beard oil like Leven Rose Beard Oil. It’s 100% organic and contains only two ingredients: Organic Moroccan Argan Oil and Organic Jojoba Oil. Limited ingredient products are also great for guys with sensitive skin, so that’s something to consider as well. Additionally, Leven Rose Beard Oil also functions as a leave-in conditioner.
For general beard itching, it’s important to follow proper beard hygiene. Remember that beards catch a lot of debris like pollen and bacteria. While this is great for your health, because you’re not actually ingesting these unfriendlies, it can still lead to a lot of skin irritation as your beard grows out. To solve this problem, cleanse with a quality beard shampoo like Medicine Man’s Anti-Itch Beard Wash; what’s great about this product is, not only does it clear away the nasty debris, it’s specifically designed for men with itchy beards like yourself.
I like the bottle design on this one, which comes with a nice pump action, making it easier to apply to the beard. After I finished this bottle of oil (which was great, by the way) I poured the other oils I experimented with into it, so I could reuse this unique bottle design. MOST POPULAR.
Mustache wax has a stronger hold than styling balm, so a tiny bit goes a long way when it comes to unshakeable hold. As a result, a little tube of wax can last you a pretty long time. It offers a naturally flexible hold and keeps hair out of your mouth while you eat.
The verdict: Super stylish, super powerful, the Norelco 7000 remains a grooming staple. A specially designed vacuum system captures 90% of liberated hairs in the handle of the unit for quick and easy disposal, keeping your floor and wardrobe mess-free. The contour head attachment works flawlessly in personalising beard styles, gliding gently across the face to reach every area and preventing the trimmer from tugging to avoid inflammation. We also love that it protects the self-sharpening blades to keep the base working efficiently without any oil tune-ups. Adding to its finesse is the turbo button feature, speeding up the blades and fan to cut through thicker hair with faster precision. Up to 20 lock-in length settings are afforded to you, starting at 0.5 and going up to 10mm for modern day Vikings. Great battery power is another virtue of this trimmer, with a single charge generating up to an hour of wireless use.
For those growing out the beards, this is where all the fun starts to come in. After about 2 months you’ll notice your beard does some really funky things. What was once a straight and neat look, becomes wavy, curly and what you may think is wild. This is natural and it should be embraced as your natural beard.
Wash your face thoroughly before you apply Minoxidil foam and rinse your hands and fingers under cold water to prevent the foam from dissolving before you apply it. How much you use with each application is up to you, but the suggested amount is only enough that would fill half of the container’s cap.
3. Hydrate – You want to regularly moisturize your skin but also, adding oil to your beard and to the skin below is important for hydration. Putting on a natural moisturizer will help regulate oil production on your skin (Argan oil is great for this), will keep your skin from drying out and getting cracked, and will stimulate your cells to promote hair growth. It is really important to use a natural beard oil that will hydrate your hair just like the natural oil your body produces.
When you trim your long beard, keep it simple. Do only what you need to do to maintain the shape you want and no more. By practicing adequate nutrition, good beard care and some common sense, you’ll be able to get your beard to your desired length in no time.
After you’ve trimmed your beard and mustache, then you should maintain the shape of your beard. Use the beard trimmer with the adjustable trimming guide removed (be careful) to keep the neck line of your beard well-defined. Alternatively, you could carefully shave the lower portion of your neck to maintain the neck line of your beard.
New beard hairs can feel like “a cactus poking your skin” says Olvera, but the prickly sensation subsides after a week, so stay tough. “It helps to brush the hair so everything grows in the same direction.” Try one of these ten grooming products—especially the beard softener and beard oil.
Still, beards remained rare among the Romans throughout the Late Republic and the early Principate. In a general way, in Rome at this time, a long beard was considered a mark of slovenliness and squalor. The censors L. Veturius and P. Licinius compelled M. Livius, who had been banished, on his restoration to the city, to be shaved, and to lay aside his dirty appearance, and then, but not until then, to come into the Senate.[26] The first occasion of shaving was regarded as the beginning of manhood, and the day on which this took place was celebrated as a festival.[27] Usually, this was done when the young Roman assumed the toga virilis. Augustus did it in his twenty-fourth year, Julius Caesar in his twentieth. The hair cut off on such occasions was consecrated to a god. Thus Nero put his into a golden box set with pearls, and dedicated it to Jupiter Capitolinus.[28] The Romans, unlike the Greeks, let their beards grow in time of mourning; so did Augustus for the death of Julius Caesar.[29] Other occasions of mourning on which the beard was allowed to grow were, appearance as a reus, condemnation, or some public calamity. On the other hand, men of the country areas around Rome in the time of Varro seem not to have shaved except when they came to market every eighth day, so that their usual appearance was most likely a short stubble.[30]
Harvey suggests using balm if you’re rocking shorter facial scruff and using the oil if you’ve reached the bush leagues. Take a 5p-sized amount – your beard oil may come with a dropper – and work in it through your facial hair evenly with your hands. It’s best to apply the balm or oil when your skin is slightly moist so the best time may be just after a shower or washing your face. It’s also key to comb or brush your beard after applying.
To naturally boost your testosterone, you’re gonna want to sleep a lot, but only a little more than the national average. So anywhere between 7-10 hours per night will do you a lot of good. Most testosterone is produced during REM sleep, so more sleep = more testosterone. In addition to sleeping more, you’ll want to make sure you’re eating enough as well. Low-calorie diets can take a huge toll on your reproductive system, slowing down your testosterone production. To combat this, consider taking some snacks with you though throughout the day and eat a little more than you think you need.
While I was looking at each beard oil company, I noticed that just about every one offer a true unscented one. They were called, unscented, nude, bare etc…etc. You just have to look at the whole catalog of each company. Lucky Scruff offers one, Dream Beard does, as well as Blacklabelbeard and Beardoilshop.
For best results, we recommend splashing a small amount of beard oil into your palm and massaging it into your skin and beard. This can be done after washing your beard with an all natural soap, or anytime you want to add some extra shine to your beard. In order to distribute the beard oil evenly through your facial hair, we recommend using a boars hair beard brush. This also serves the important purpose of gently removing dry, dead skin cells which can clog pores and cause ingrown hairs.
On the other end of the spectrum, guys with rectangular faces, which are a much longer facial version of a square face shape, hence the name, should opt for longer hair on the sides and shorter on the chin so they don’t make their already long face even longer. This look is great for tall lanky guys who have narrow faces because it adds some extra bulk and substance to their visage.
If you are looking out for a multi-purpose trimmer, then this product might not fit in your demands. It can possibly work great on your beard, but for other trimming purposes, you might have to shuffle the market once again.
A couple things to keep in mind before styling your beard: 1) you need the proper tools, and 2) you don’t need as much time as you think. The whole process, in fact, shouldn’t take more than a few minutes, especially once you get the hang of it. The tools you choose are up to you, but we recommend using both a beard brush and comb, Styling Balm, Sea Salt Spray, and a hair dryer.
Microbiologists determined in tests that beards “contained a lot of normal bacteria, but some were comparable to toilets” Skin underneath the beard can build oil and lead to acne, along with other skin conditions
Beard oil products are a blend of one or more ingredients, such as jojoba oil, argan oil, coconut oil, grape seed oil, hempseed oil that are used to address specific beard problems such as itching, sensitive skin or dryness by going straight to the follicle in a similar fashion to hair conditioner.
While most noblemen and knights were bearded, the Catholic clergy were generally required to be clean-shaven. This was understood as a symbol of their celibacy. The adoption of different beard styles and personal grooming had great cultural and political significance in the Early Middle Ages.[35]
Do everything in your power to lower stress. The stress hormone; cortisol directly lowers testosterone and DHT levels and causes weakened hair growth all around the body, including the facial hair area.
Now that we have provided you with the causes of a rough beard, we are also going to share with you some of the tricks we keep in our sleeves, to help you tame the rough beast that is taking over your face.
Tools like a beard trimmer for instance. A beard trimmer is versatile and makes it easier to get exactly the beard you want. And the best ones – like the Philips Norelco Beard & Head Trimmer Series 5100 – will advance your quest even closer to perfection.
Never, ever, give up on your beard after a couple of weeks simply because it looks patchy, scraggly, or like another adjective you prefer. Impatience claims the lives of too many beards, as does the often-inevitable itchiness that comes in the initial stages of facial hair growth.
The thing that makes these beard oils “premium” is the rare or unique essential oil that gives the beard oil its scent and therapeutic characteristics. For example, the tobacco beard oil doesn’t have tobacco in it, but instead has a natural essential oil that mimics the scent of rich pipe tobacco. These rarer essential oils are more expensive to use–thus the price.
Depending on the size of your beard, you may need to use a few more drops for major coverage. Huge beards may need 7 or 8 drops, whereas smaller ones may only need 3 or 4. Our 1oz containers may seem like a small amount, but since you’re only using a few drops a day, it should last several months!
Tip: It may seem counterintuitive when you’re trying to grow your beard out, but you can use a beard trimmer to keep all your facial hair trimmed to a shorter length closer to your face, which will help make those sparse patches less apparent while they’re filling in.
This product is a must have…ASAP! Let me tell you why. I suffer from extremely sensitive skin. Wanting to keep a good looking beard has been a challenge for years. There was no shampoo, conditioner, etc… you name it. Nothing would help. I stopped using any kind of product for while because the skin under my beard was not happy. Later on decided to try something different. Keep in mind I’ve tried other beard oils before and instead of stopping itching and dryness, it made it worse. That was a sign of irritation as well. After reading the reviews of this product I said “What do I have to lose?” This Leven Rose Beard Oil has stopped COMPLETELY the dryness and itchiness of my beard. No Beardruff to be seen. Hairs are growing in better shape and I’m noticing tiny hairs growing in areas that I thought were going to be hairless forever. My skin is happy, my beard is happy and I feel more confident in having a beard now. Also would like to say that the customer service with the seller has been extraordinary. Thank you Nicole.
Hi, Robert! That’s a great question. The answer is that you’ll continually benefit from using beard oil or beard balm. It helps to think about your hair, including your beard hair, has having a life cycle. Your hair is constantly falling out and being replaced with new hair. When applied properly beard oil will nourish your hair beneath the skin, which will improve it’s health as new hair grows in. It will also help keep the current hair healthy and hydrated which means less breakage.

Limited Length Settings: The 8 length settings on this model don’t give you a lot to choose from, which as a result can really limit the styles of beard styles you are able to achieve and inhibit your grooming ability. Depending on the type of beard you like to sport, this model simply may not be up to the challenge.
Hello, you should take a look at our best stubble trimmer review. The I-Stubble goes down to 0.4. You can go even blow that by detaching the guide. Anything lower than that would already be considered a ‘razor shave’.
How long it takes to grow a beard largely depends on a combination of genetics and the beard length and beard fullness you’re aiming for, as well several other factors. Naturally, growing a short beard will result in a shorter growth time. A close-cropped, stubbly beard can come in a week or two. Long beards, on the other hand, can take years of growing for even the fastest hair growers.
Maintenance– To wash and clean a trimmer is truly a daunting task. The trimmers that allow easy cleaning are the ones that are preferred the most. Product maintenance is yet another factor that you need to study; this would definitely guide you towards a better product that lies within your budget.

Beard balm is a versatile product. You don’t need to fully apply it as it can be used sparingly in problem areas such as the sideburns. As a control product it is designed to help give shape and keep down stray hairs. It may take a few tries to get the amount right but once you do you’ll be ready to hit the town.

I was growing a beard for about 3 months, and it was looking pretty good but there was definite patchiness (I had since had to shave due to a new job). I kept the mustache and I had the basic shape of the mustache I was wanting to go for but it didn’t fill in as thick as I would prefer it to, understanding that beard oil doesn’t quite help growth what can you recommend I do to get that mustache filled in properly? I know it’s a determination process but I know there’s gotta be some way to at least speed up the process somewhat. Also in my early 20’s if that’s a variable factor. Waiting for a reply at anytime!
