Go for a natural boar bristle brush like this one from Smooth Viking, which features 100% black wild boar bristles. Boar bristle is superior to synthetics because it doesn’t irritate the skin below your beard and is easy to work with.
This is also why some men can’t grow full beards. Either the levels of T and DHT are too low for that, or the receptiveness of the facial hair follicle androgen receptors is not strong enough to properly utilize the hormones for beard growth stimulation.
The Panasonic ER-GB40-S is versatile – you can use it on your arms, chest, and other areas – and easy to use thanks to blades that are angled in a way to facilitate clean cutting. It’s also easy to clean and transportable. Finally, it’s affordable.
The beard develops during puberty. Beard growth is linked to stimulation of hair follicles in the area by dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which continues to affect beard growth after puberty. Various hormones stimulate hair follicles from different areas. DHT, for example, may also promote short-term pogonotrophy (i.e., the growing of facial hair). For example, a scientist who chose to remain anonymous spent several weeks on a remote island in comparative isolation. He noticed that his beard growth diminished, but the day before he was due to leave the island it increased again, reaching unusually high rates of growth during the first day or two on the mainland. He studied the effect and concluded that the stimulus for increased beard growth was related to the resumption of sexual activity. However, at that time professional pogonologists, such as R.M. Hardisty, dismissed a connection. Despite DHT’s relationship with terminal body and facial hair growth, the dominant hormone in facial hair development is likely the male sex hormone testosterone, with DHT more closely associated with beard growth speed rather than density (or “coverage”); moreover, neither hormone acts alone, depending instead on the quantity of androgen receptors on the face. Subjects with a greater preponderance of receptors will develop more terminal adult facial hairs.

As you grow your beard you will be able to relate to this; if you ever stop shaving for a few weeks – you might experience the infamous beard itch! The beard itch is not mere friction and stinging from the new grown hair. It is the actual skin rebelling since your face isn’t getting the proper treatment. If you wish for your beard and your skin to be healthy and itch free, you should really think about using one of the products above to alleviate the unnecessary stress.
There are hundreds of beard balms on the market – certainly more than we could possibly try ourselves. Our research for best beard balm 2018 was, rest assured, thorough, and took into account personal experience, reviews, and customer experience.
After some experimenting, you’ll quickly find your favorite combos. My favorite scents are definitely peppermint and tea tree. As for carrier oils, I enjoy the coconut because the dry Colorado air dries out my skin. The jojoba is also a great base since it closely mimics the natural oil your body creates. Again, refer to the benefits above of the various carrier oils, and figure out what works best for you. Below are a few of my favorite recipes. The names are my own creation, but feel free to steal them.
Understanding the features– Now is the time to understand the features of the product. After you have lined down the product you think suit you aptly, it’s time to move on to the next step, and that basically involves understanding the product attributes and how is one option better than the other.
Product attributes- The product should allow multiple functions, the best electric beard trimmer is not the one which could be just used to trim the beard. It should instead have all the properties which allow the user to shape the beard and make it look just perfect. It should support trimming of beard of all kinds, and should prove to be the apt alternative for shaping the beard in the required form.
Let’s be honest not everybody can grow a full beard. Facial hair will vary depending on the shape of your face and genetics – whether you’re naturally hairy or not. Remember that in essence growing a beard is a fashion statement. The last thing you want is a beard style that will not fit the shape of your face.
The first ingredients in your recipe are your carrier oils. Basically, mix and match your oils to get about 1oz’s worth (you can always do more or less as desired; I have 1oz bottles, so that’s how much I made). In this first recipe I measured out half an ounce each of jojoba oil and sweet almond oil. You could also simply use a single carrier oil rather than mixing. Again, it’s about scent and the health benefits accrued, as well as what feels best on your skin. Experiment with various combinations of carrier oils to find what you like best.
Natural beard oils are typically created with both carrier oils and essential oils, absolutes, and/or extracts. Carrier oils are oils that make up the bulk of the volume of the product and are formulated to condition the skin and beard. The most popular types of carrier oils are coconut, grape seed, jojoba, saffron and argan. They are used as a natural fragrance for the beard oils, but also may have aromatherapy benefits. Since essential oils, absolutes, and extracts are usually very strong they may cause chemical burns or skin irritation, they are commonly paired up with carrier oils in order to dilute them.
Great reviews however every beard trimmer I’ve come across has performed badly with the short curly beard. I tend to trim my beard back to 3-4mm and let it grow for a few days. My fur is quite coarse and curls back so I find a lot of blades just skim over the surface. Any recommendations?!
Wahl Clipper Stainless Steel Lithium Ion Plus Beard Trimmers for Men, Hair Clippers and Shavers, Nose Ear Trimmers, Rechargeable All in One Men’s Grooming Kit, by the Brand used by Professionals #9818
Beard tonics are very similar to beard oils in that they are not only made of oil, but hold many oils in common to standard beard oils. The real differences are small and tend to focus towards specific goals like healing the skin below your beard or promoting beard growth.
So I just started growing my goatee out again. I have been putting it off for a while now because I hate the initial itching that comes with it. I have ridiculously course whiskers so I need something to make it softer. I decided to give this stuff a try and I will admit that I am very happy with the results. I’m not going to sit here and say that my whiskers are as soft as a baby birds feathers but they are noticeably softer. It has cut the itching in half. If I had to come up with one complaint it would be that I wish the bottle was double the size for the price. I like to put on more than the recommended dose. All in all I am very pleased!
Professor Edward J Fuzzworthy’s Gentleman’s Beard Detangler Bar is both a beard conditioner and a detangler, which utilizes Tasmian beer—yes beer—and honey to soften your beard while getting out those stubborn tangles.
This is absolutely not true, at least not necessarily. While there are several causes of acne, and it could make you break out worse, most types of acnes would be helped by coconut oil. Look into it and read about it, you’ll see numerous articles about it.

Beards have been part of the Amish culture for, well, forever. Suffice to say; it figures that their methods of beard care – now having been passed down for generations – are worth paying attention to. Their hand-crafted, all-natural beard oil is worth the price of admission for its smell alone, which is decidedly distinctive but not overpowering.
There are a few B vitamins that can help your hair grow faster. The most widely used is biotin (vitamin B7). A small daily supplement will give you the biggest kick of any tips on this list. Ask your dermatologist for the best dosage for you, though Dr. James Collyer of Modern Dermatology in Seattle suggests 2.5-5mg daily. But don’t ignore the other tips here—especially #3—if you start relying on biotin for hair growth. Drink plenty of water when supplementing with biotin, to prevent dry skin and breakouts. Biotin strengthens the proteins in your hair, skin, and nails (called keratins), and helps each grow stronger and quicker. You’ll probably first notice it in your nails. Other B vitamins to ask your doctor about are thiamin (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3). These are called “B-Complex vitamins” that also strengthen the same proteins in hair, skin, and nails.
This is how the demand for coconut oil started increasing and becoming the center of attention. More cosmetic producers started including it in their formulas while all hair experts recommending it as the number one product to use when you want to grow your beard faster -and yes, hair as well.
This will help nourish facial hair at the roots. Reverse and run your fingers through your beard in a downward motion from top to bottom, spreading the balm down the hair follicles. Don’t forget your mustache and the hair around your mouth. Brush the balm through your beard with a boar’s hair beard brush to distribute the balm evenly through your beard.
I have had 3 wahl beard trimmers in under 2 years, all had the same problem they didn’t last very long, the battery does not hold much charge even after all night charging. The cutting power is ok if the trimmer works, but a razor is superior. The stainless steel rusts so it’s very poor quality. The life span of this trimmer is about 4 or 5 charges and not hold a charge at all. Keep in mind I’ve had 3 in less than 2 years. Next trimmer i buy will be a cheap $20 beard trimmer which will last longer and hold its charge therefore making it more reliable than the wahl. I will never buy american products if i can help it as I’ve had nothing but stress from them. I paid over $160 for the wahl, very very very dissapointed 3 times.
Multiple uses- The best beard trimmer with vacuum shall be capable of performing multiple jobs. If the product is designed to just trim the beard, then it may sound to be of very less good use for the users. As the market is filled with the capable options, which offer multiple functions, the most adorable beard trimmer would surely be the one which could be used to trim hairs from different corners
The Bible states in Leviticus 19:27, “You shall not round off the corners of your heads nor mar the corners of your beard.” Talmudic tradition explains it to mean that a man may not shave his beard with a razor with a single blade, since the cutting action of the blade against the skin “mars” the beard. Because scissors have two blades, some opinions in halakha (Jewish law) permit their use to trim the beard, as the cutting action comes from contact of the two blades, and not the blade against the skin. For this reason, some poskim (Jewish legal deciders) rule that Orthodox Jews may use electric razors to remain clean-shaven, as such shavers cut by trapping the hair between the blades and the metal grating, halakhically a scissor-like action. Other poskim, like Zokon Yisrael KiHilchso, maintain that electric shavers constitute a razor-like action, and consequently prohibit their use.
Many of the best trimmers are good for wet and dry use, i.e., you can both use it in the shower and/or with shave gels, lotions, and foams. Waterproof trimmers are usually easier to clean, as well. In most cases, you simply wash them with water from your faucet to remove excess hair trimmings. That kind of convenience is hard to beat.
2. Let It Grow: In the same way you need to suffer through some awkward medium-length hairstyles en route to Fabio-like hair, sometimes you need to suffer through some awkward beard growing phases in order to fill in the patchy spots. Even if it’s not quite curly enough to fill in the patchy spots by just swirling over them, let it all grow out as long as you can and it’ll start to cover these spots. You should let it grow untrimmed on the cheeks and under the chin for at least a month at the start. Relax it daily with a nourishing beard oil, to encourage some movement and softness. A weekly hot oil treatment will do wonders for softness (and for your skin), and you can also brush the beard daily, then coach the strays over any patches with a high-hold, conditioning beard balm. But please, while you grow it out, keep the neckline, cheeklines, and mustache in check.
Grooming a beard does take time but when you see the results it is well worth it. These are just some general guidelines for beard grooming to help get you started. As with everything in life there will be nuances depending how long your beard is and other factors like if you have dry facial hair that will influence that product you will choose. If you think I missed a tip, please do tell me in the comment section, I’d love to hear from you.
This product is a must have…ASAP! Let me tell you why. I suffer from extremely sensitive skin. Wanting to keep a good looking beard has been a challenge for years. There was no shampoo, conditioner, etc… you name it. Nothing would help. I stopped using any kind of product for while because the skin under my beard was not happy. Later on decided to try something different. Keep in mind I’ve tried other beard oils before and instead of stopping itching and dryness, it made it worse. That was a sign of irritation as well. After reading the reviews of this product I said “What do I have to lose?” This Leven Rose Beard Oil has stopped COMPLETELY the dryness and itchiness of my beard. No Beardruff to be seen. Hairs are growing in better shape and I’m noticing tiny hairs growing in areas that I thought were going to be hairless forever. My skin is happy, my beard is happy and I feel more confident in having a beard now. Also would like to say that the customer service with the seller has been extraordinary. Thank you Nicole.
The goal is only to trim enough to clear your lip without going much higher up. You’ll want to use a precision blade for this if your trimmer came with one for more accuracy. If not, just use the narrowest blade you have.
Bro, I know what you are thinking, we just said oils and I’m giving you a balm. Honest Amish is one of the most popular brands when it comes to beard grooming; this balm has existed for a long time, long before beards were all the rage among men. Honest Amish has a lot of dedication and experience when it comes to beards. It goes without saying that the brand is a staple and that is something you should take into strong consideration when making your purchase. There are countless positive reviews and a large and loyal fan base that accompanies this brand and their products.
Coconut oil, being an excellent moisturizing agent, is often used in beard oils. The coconut oil that you buy in the store is most often in solid form, as it has a high melting point of about 76 degrees F. This can obviously make it difficult to work with. To use coconut oil as a base carrier of your beard oil, you’ll have to first melt it so you can mix with your essential oils. I put a large tablespoon of the solid oil into a dish, then set that dish into another that had hot water. The oil liquified in no time and I was able to mix in a few drops of an essential oil. It will then re-solidify, and you end up with more of a beard balm. You simply rub a little on your fingers, and your body heat will melt it, thereby turning it into oil again, ready to use on your facial hair.
