During the early nineteenth century, most men, particularly among the nobility and upper classes, went clean-shaven. There was, however, a dramatic shift in the beard’s popularity during the 1850s, with it becoming markedly more popular.[37] Consequently, beards were adopted by many leaders, such as Alexander III of Russia, Napoleon III of France and Frederick III of Germany, as well as many leading statesmen and cultural figures, such as Benjamin Disraeli, Charles Dickens, Giuseppe Garibaldi, Karl Marx, and Giuseppe Verdi. This trend can be recognised in the United States of America, where the shift can be seen amongst the post-Civil War presidents. Before Abraham Lincoln, no President wore a beard;[38] after Lincoln until Woodrow Wilson, every President except Andrew Johnson and William McKinley had either a beard or a moustache of some sort.
A great starting point for guys who have never tried out a beard oil before. Bulldog’s Original Beard Oil might be on the cheaper end of the spectrum but this stuff is legit, containing natural ingredients like aloe vera, camelina oil and green tea to condition your beard. It’s also free from artificial colours and ingredients from animal sources.
After shampooing, you may use a conditioner. Be sure to rinse thoroughly. Failure to rinse sufficiently may result in flaking. Because beard hairs are so coarse, conditioners will have less effect on the beard than on the hair on your head. But a conditioner will still help make your beard feel softer.

We’ve talked about using a blow dryer in our videos, but usually, it comes with a bit of a disclaimer to keep an eye on it and use it in moderation. If used too much it could dry up those follicles and cause split ends. To combat this, you can hold the hair dryer further away from your beard, use a medium heat setting, or even use the cool setting. All of this will help make sure your beard doesn’t get damaged. Just make sure you’re using an oil or balm to keep it moisturized after it’s dry.
Easy Handling– The best beard trimmer for men is the one which allows easy handling and convenient process of operation. The mechanism should be easy to understand, so that even if the product has wide assortments in the attachments, the user shall understand the use of each and every attachment that comes up with the product. While at the same time, the size of the product shall be compact enough to be packed and carried to different locations.
I’ve always wanted to keep my salt and pepper beard at a fuller length to go with the silver on the head. What trimmer offers the longest length. All I’ve tried take it way to low and trying to do it by hand is just to hard. One slip of an unsteady hand and it all goes to stuble. Any other options would be fantastic but maintaining optimal beard length is my main desire
Hi Kate, the PANASONIC ER-GB40-S mentioned in our review comes with a charging stand, but does not come with an ear & nose trimmer. Nose hair trimmers are pretty inexpensive, so getting a separate one shouldn’t be a huge issue. Be sure to check out our guide of the best nose hair trimmer.

2. Let It Grow: In the same way you need to suffer through some awkward medium-length hairstyles en route to Fabio-like hair, sometimes you need to suffer through some awkward beard growing phases in order to fill in the patchy spots. Even if it’s not quite curly enough to fill in the patchy spots by just swirling over them, let it all grow out as long as you can and it’ll start to cover these spots. You should let it grow untrimmed on the cheeks and under the chin for at least a month at the start. Relax it daily with a nourishing beard oil, to encourage some movement and softness. A weekly hot oil treatment will do wonders for softness (and for your skin), and you can also brush the beard daily, then coach the strays over any patches with a high-hold, conditioning beard balm. But please, while you grow it out, keep the neckline, cheeklines, and mustache in check.
Just a heads up – you’re more than likely going to run into snags during the combing process. Snags aren’t necessarily knots in your beard, but are the result of individual strands of hair growing in different directions and crossing over one another. When you come to a snag, don’t try to force it out. Instead, gently pull it out with your comb. Remember, this isn’t a race. There are no bonus points awarded for combing your beard faster than the next guy.
When you’re growing a full beard, you need to remember where it’s coming from – out of your face through those hair follicles. Even though there’s beard hair over it now, you still need to take care of it.
In the second century AD the Emperor Hadrian, according to Dion Cassius, was the first of all the Caesars to grow a beard; Plutarch says that he did it to hide scars on his face. This was a period in Rome of widespread imitation of Greek culture, and many other men grew beards in imitation of Hadrian and the Greek fashion. Until the time of Constantine the Great the emperors appear in busts and coins with beards; but Constantine and his successors until the reign of Phocas, with the exception of Julian the Apostate, are represented as beardless.
If like many men, you suffer patchy facial hair, consider filling in the blanks with beard products that give the appearance of thicker beards. This will immediately draw the eye to the area and make it look as if there is more hair than there is. Most of the time, celebrities keep their beards short and thick, and use this approach. You would be surprised how short some beards actually are, but it’s actually their presence that carries the greatest of weight.
Whether or not you should grow a beard depends in large part on genetics. Beard growth is genetically determined and there is not much anyone can do other than to accept what they’ve been given. If you have developed enough facial hair to allow you to grow a beard, then you owe it to yourself to grow it out at least once during your lifetime — even if only as an experiment. You may be so pleased with the results, even unexpectedly so, that you decide to keep the beard permanently.
The ER-GB40-S is fully rechargeable and comes with an AC charging stand. You’ll get 50 minutes of use with an hour charge – but you can leave it on the charging stand and know that it’s always ready for use.
Better yet, you’ll only need to charge it for one hour to get back the full 80 minutes. You can also use the Philips Norelco 7200 while it’s charging and it includes a battery indicator to let you know when it’s charged, charging, or needs to be plugged in.
Think of that guy with the great handlebar mustache that no one can keep their eyes off of; that’s being held in place by mustache wax. And it’s nothing new because the use of wax on facial hair dates to the Victorian era and beyond.
After some time of implementing my findings, I decided to give another shot at attempting to grow a beard, and this time, it worked. After 2-3 months of no shaving whatsoever, I finally was able to grow a full beard. Not majestic Dan Bilzerian style yet, but still, certainly impressive one (which still keeps improving due to implementing the findings on a daily basis).

Brushing it first thing each day will loosen any grime, dirt, or dead skin cells lodged in your beard from the previous day. Like using a comb, you start by brushing it “out,” but if you have a shorter beard – say, around a half inch – it’s simply a matter of brushing it straight down and training the hairs to grow in the direction you want them to. You can even use your beard brush on your mustache.
Beard balm is a versatile product. You don’t need to fully apply it as it can be used sparingly in problem areas such as the sideburns. As a control product it is designed to help give shape and keep down stray hairs. It may take a few tries to get the amount right but once you do you’ll be ready to hit the town.
Do everything in your power to lower stress. The stress hormone; cortisol directly lowers testosterone and DHT levels and causes weakened hair growth all around the body, including the facial hair area.
Sometimes beards are called “flavor savers” for a reason. It is possible to get food, lint, and other junk stuck in your beard, if it grows especially long. Comb it regularly to keep it from becoming a bird’s nest.
Think of beard oil more as an everyday habit and a companion in building a fierce beard and less like a weird new trend that set off out of nowhere. There is one thousand and one reasons for you to start using the oil that will make your beard better and healthier and sooner you understand it – the better.
If you’re already doing your best to properly care for your facial hair, but you still have patches, then try finding a beard style that is shaped similarly to how your hair naturally grows. There are several beard style charts on the internet that you can take a look at to find a style that works best for you. In the end, you’ll be happiest if you work with what you have, and not against it.
After you’ve combed your bed-beard out layer by layer, comb it back down into the desired shape. You can even use your hands and some product to apply the finishing touches after you’ve combed it down.

Beard oil can handle the moisturizing needs of a short to medium length beard, especially if you’re prone to dry skin – but even if you’re not. Not that you shouldn’t still use beard oil when your beard gets longer. On the contrary. You should continue to use oil throughout the glorious life of your beard.
Some men are blessed with fast-growing facial hair, while others may struggle with slow-growing or patchy whiskers. The rate that your facial hair grows depends mostly on genetics, but if you are anxious for your beard to come in, there are a few tricks you can try to maximize growth rate and fullness. To grow a beard faster, care for your face by cleaning, moisturizing, and exfoliating properly, take biotin or other vitamin supplements that encourage hair growth, and leave your beard alone as it starts growing in.
When you’re confident that you’ve spread the beard oil out evenly, grab a beard comb and gently comb your beard to shape. Beard oil doesn’t hold a shape very well. If you want to maintain a certain shape, then I suggest you try some beard gloss. However, oil will give your beard weight and give it a nice sheen. Comb it out to brighten up this sheen and order un-orderly strands that will try to fly out here and there.
Raise your testosterone levels to speed up facial hair growth. If you’re currently going through puberty, or have gone through puberty but haven’t started growing your facial hair yet, there are some simple things you can do to stimulate testosterone levels and encourage hair growth. The effect won’t necessarily be fast, but you’ll get hair growing if you do some combination of the following:
You want to wash with Birch Tar Soap http://themodcabin.com/product/birch-tar-soap/. A regular store bought shampoo or soap may dry out your beard and make it brittle. Once your beard is nearly dry, apply beard oil. We suggest Gunbarrel Beard Oil http://themodcabin.com/product/gunbarrel-beard-oil/, and you can top it off with our Backwoods Beard Balm to provide some hold and lock in all that moisture. http://themodcabin.com/product/backwoods-beard-balm-conditioner/
I’ve tried a few different brands of beard oil. My favourite is from an Australian company called The Bearded Chap. It costs more than the average beard oil, but I think it’s worth it. They have a range of products. I have yet to find a company with a better oil or beard soap.
Beard conditioner is the first beard softening product every man should know about. Conditioner is what sets your beard on the path to softness. Like beard shampoo, you always want to go with a beard conditioner as opposed to whatever you’re using on your head. The Art of Shaving’s Beard Conditioner is a good example of the sort of conditioner you should be using on your beard. It’s a very general beard conditioner that works with most beard types.
Male members of the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite in Moundridge, Kansas, refrain from shaving as they see man created in the image of God, and as God has a beard. They see their church as the One True Church. One of their tracts stresses the necessity of being bearded.
Besides the obvious answer, it’s good to know that coconut oil is produced in huge volumes annually and it’s really popular across the globe. Yet it still hasn’t been utilized to its full potential. Only recently, more companies in food and personal care industry started creating new products to take advantage of its excellent health -and not only, benefits.
That being said, there are some ways how to grow a beard faster – to help produce a fuller beard and we can say under good authority that this can be achieved in as little as thirty days time. let these be some tips and suggestions for establishing long-term results that can be tracked on a month-to-month basis. Moisturize daily. If you have sensitive skin, try several moisturizers before you start growing your beard, and continue moisturizing your beard follicles and your face after you grow a beard, to keep your skin healthy underneath. A healthy beard needs a healthy base from which to grow.
Follow up your shampoo with some beard conditioner, like Zeus Beard Conditioner Wash for Men. Not only does it soften all that new beard bristle you’re experiencing, it has a manly, subtle verbena lime scent that will make the ladies swoon.
Super informative article. One of many i’m guessing. Haven’t had time to peruse any of the other articles on this site but no doubt that will be of the same high calibre. Any one who writes a great review about Honest Amish Beard Balm is a friend of mine – and of who i rankly highly in the beard grooming world. I was introduced to Honest Amish after coming across a similar review article over at Hot Shave Hustlers. It’s a product that just keeps on giving and giving year in – year out. No doubt in my top 3 beard balms along with the infamous Wild Willies Beard Butter and Professor Edward Fuzzworthy’s beard care balm gloss,(…what a mouthful!). Also highly impressed by other products coming out of the Honest Amish stable, namely the Premium Beard oil and the Beard and Body Soap (slick). Hands down a great article right here. Look forward to perusing the site and reading much more.. JM
I just wanted to tell you, great job on your article. Nose hair is a big issue lol. and a pain in the ass, so I can relate. I just published an article about growing a viking beard and I linked to your article. Great job!
The Panasonic ER-GB40-S is versatile – you can use it on your arms, chest, and other areas – and easy to use thanks to blades that are angled in a way to facilitate clean cutting. It’s also easy to clean and transportable. Finally, it’s affordable.

Well, you’ve proven the 8th grade critics that called your fledgling facial hair “a hideous Pandora’s Box of peach fuzz” wrong and grown the type of manly beard deodorant commercials are based on. Then, in a stroke of genius, you made sure said beard would be even more glorious (yes, somehow that was possible) by purchasing our Beard Oil or Beard Balm. We understand that now would be a most inopportune time to drop the ball — and we’ve got your back. To ensure maximum beard mojo, here’s the answers to your questions on how to apply your new Texas Beard Co. products.
Once you’ve defined your cheek line, trim downwards, starting at the top of your cheek. Take your time. The hair on your cheeks doesn’t grow back as quickly as it does on your neck, so moderation – once again – is important.
Still, beards remained rare among the Romans throughout the Late Republic and the early Principate. In a general way, in Rome at this time, a long beard was considered a mark of slovenliness and squalor. The censors L. Veturius and P. Licinius compelled M. Livius, who had been banished, on his restoration to the city, to be shaved, and to lay aside his dirty appearance, and then, but not until then, to come into the Senate.[26] The first occasion of shaving was regarded as the beginning of manhood, and the day on which this took place was celebrated as a festival.[27] Usually, this was done when the young Roman assumed the toga virilis. Augustus did it in his twenty-fourth year, Julius Caesar in his twentieth. The hair cut off on such occasions was consecrated to a god. Thus Nero put his into a golden box set with pearls, and dedicated it to Jupiter Capitolinus.[28] The Romans, unlike the Greeks, let their beards grow in time of mourning; so did Augustus for the death of Julius Caesar.[29] Other occasions of mourning on which the beard was allowed to grow were, appearance as a reus, condemnation, or some public calamity. On the other hand, men of the country areas around Rome in the time of Varro seem not to have shaved except when they came to market every eighth day, so that their usual appearance was most likely a short stubble.[30]
For some guys, the day they decide to let their beards grow, they are met with the beginnings of a full, dense mane of hair on their faces. And for others, they find the process to be slightly less encouraging. Sparse and wiry hairs, and hairless patches can thrust doubt into the mind of a beardsman, but we’re here to tell you that just because you’re sporting a patchy beard doesn’t mean there aren’t things you can do to make it look fuller, denser, and more badass.
Biologists characterize beards as a secondary sexual characteristic because they are unique to one sex, yet do not play a direct role in reproduction. Charles Darwin first suggested possible evolutionary explanation of beards in his work The Descent of Man, which hypothesized that the process of sexual selection may have led to beards.[6] Modern biologists have reaffirmed the role of sexual selection in the evolution of beards, concluding that there is evidence that a majority of females find men with beards more attractive than men without beards.[7][8][9]
Beard hair tends to be coarser than the hair on your head, which makes beards harder to manage. Beard balm fixes that issue by softening and conditioning your beard to make it healthier, which in turn makes it easier to groom and style.
You can’t just will a beard to grow and throw caution to the wind. There are a ton of guys out there who give a shit about what people think about them, and that’s ok. You want to have the confidence to grow a beard but don’t to burn the bridges of your relationship. Life is all about compromising where you need to.
Still, as with all fashions, what was old is eventually new again. Dr. Allan Peterkin, beard expert and author of ‘One Thousand Beards: A Cultural History of Facial Hair,’ says that latter-day beard growth, as it were, is no longer a function of army culture, but instead comes from pop culture influences. “Some even see growing a beard as a playful backlash to feminism, being one of the few things women can’t do,” he says.
There are a lot of named beard styles, as we’ve previously discussed. If you want to know which one is right for you, consider its characteristics. For instance, if that style is long on the sides, you’re going to want to avoid it if you have a round face because it will add extra width to you, which you don’t need.
