Fine-art Friday: Tulia Texas documentary.
While I sit around upstairs waxing endlessly about beards, basketball and such, one of my more enterprising neighbors has quietly built a reputation as an acclaimed director and producer of independent documentary films. Cassandra Herrman is her name, and along with partner Kelly Whalen, their latest work explores one of the most egregious travesties of small-town justice in modern times.
The trailer pretty much speaks for itself. Our esteemed collegue and media assassin Mr. Meschery’s fellow day jobbers at ITVS recently picked up the television distribution rights to this puppy for the PBS series “Independent Lens.” While an airing date hasn’t been set (to my knowledge, anyway), the film promises to be worth a circle on your calendar. Moreover, congratulations to the filmmakers for getting out there and telling all sides of a story that was too conveniently swept under the putrid shag carpet sometimes called “The War on Drugs.”
Updates to come as the airing nears, but visit their site for more information or peep Independent Lens for an interview with the women behind the lens.

Thanks DT for doing my job for me, and writing about “Tulia Texas,” which, by the way, is scheduled to air in February of 09. I’m really bad at promoting some of my “off-beard” activities even when it would be pretty easy to argue that these great social interest films should take priority in my brain over things like Matt Barnes’ team winning the local ProAm tournament.
Yes, I owe the follow-up on Baron’s gang documentary “Made In America” - another Independent Lens feature this year. Believe it or not, there are more important television broadcasts next year than Warriors games.

Love that trailer. Just like life, everyone has there own version/perspective on reality. I can’t wait to check out the doc.
Casey, can we hook up a viewing for the FTB crew?
